Event: Prague PostgreSQL Developer Day (January 27–28, 2026)
Prague in late January is a mood with misty streets, the smell of roasted nuts in the air, and a serious focus on PostgreSQL internals. While the weather is crisp around 0°C, the warmth of the local community and the richness of the technical tracks make it the perfect start to the year.
⚽ The Football Soul: The Derby of the S
Prague is not just a capital city; it is a battlefield for two of the most historic clubs in Central Europe: Sparta Prague and Slavia Prague.
- Sparta Prague (The Iron Sparta): Their home, the epet ARENA (Letná), sits right on the edge of the beautiful Letná Park. Even during the winter break, taking a stadium tour here is legendary. You can feel the history of a club that has dominated the Czech league for decades.

- Pro Tip: After the tour, walk through Letná Park to the Stalin viewpoint for the most famous view of Prague’s bridges.
- Slavia Prague: Known as the Eternal Rivals, Slavia plays at the Fortuna Arena in Vršovice. They are known for an intellectual and working class history. The neighborhood of Vršovice is also incredibly trendy, full of hip cafes where you can find developers hiding with their laptops.
- Bohemians 1905: If you want a true underdog experience, look for the green and white kits of Bohemians. Their mascot is a kangaroo, and their stadium, Dolíček, is one of the most authentic, old school football experiences left in Europe.
🍴 The Gourmet Quest: More Than Just Dumplings
Czech food is designed for January as it is heavy, hearty, and incredibly satisfying.
- The Crown Jewel (Svíčková na smetaně): This is the ultimate Czech comfort food. It consists of sirloin steak prepared with vegetables, creamed into a thick sauce, served with bread dumplings, a dollop of cranberry jam, and a slice of lemon. It is a flavor profile you will not find anywhere else.

- The Street Snack (Trdelník): You will see these spinning over open flames on every corner. It is dough wrapped around a stick, grilled, and topped with sugar and walnuts.
- Insider Tip: Locals usually avoid the ones filled with ice cream because that is for tourists. Try it plain and hot to appreciate the dough.
- The Liquid Gold (Pilsner Urquell): You are in the birthplace of Pilsner. In Prague, the beer is often cheaper than water. Look for a pub that says Tankovna which means the beer is served from giant tanks rather than kegs, ensuring the freshest taste possible.
📍 The Must See List for the Time Crunched Developer
Since you will be busy with workshops on Day 1 and talks on Day 2, you have to be strategic:
- The Dawn Walk: Set your alarm for 6:30 AM and walk the Charles Bridge. By 9:00 AM, it will be packed with thousands of people. At dawn, in the January mist, it feels like you have stepped back into the 14th century.
- The Astronomical Clock: Located in the Old Town Square. Every hour, the figures move. It is a 600 year old masterpiece of mechanical engineering and the original hardware that every software developer should pay respects to.

- The Strahov Library: If you love data and organization, this is the most beautiful library in the world. High ceilings, ancient globes, and thousands of leather bound books that make any modern database look small.
🇧🇪 Brussels: Data and Chocolate
Event: FOSDEM PGDay (January 30, 2026)
Brussels in late January is the global capital of open source. Before the massive crowds of the main FOSDEM event take over the city, the PostgreSQL community gathers for a focused day of technical deep dives. The atmosphere is electric, fueled by intense technical debates and the best hot chocolate in the world.
⚽ The Football Pride: The Purple and White Tradition
Belgium became a world power in football through its famous Golden Generation, and much of that heritage is rooted in Brussels.
- RSC Anderlecht: This is the most successful club in Belgian history. Their home, the Lotto Park, is located in the Anderlecht municipality. Watching a match here is a lesson in footballing tradition. The fans are demanding but deeply loyal to their purple and white colors.

- Union Saint-Gilloise: For a more nostalgic and cult-like experience, head to the Stade Joseph Marien. This club has seen a miraculous resurgence lately. Their stadium is located right on the edge of a park and looks like a piece of living history from a bygone era.
- The Belgian Red Devils: If there are no club matches, visiting the King Baudouin Stadium is a great way to pay homage to the national team that topped the FIFA rankings for years.
🍴 The Gourmet Quest: Fries, Waffles, and Beyond
Brussels is a paradise for those who enjoy the finer, and saltier, things in life.
- The Legend of the Fry (Frites): Do not call them French fries here. Belgian Frites are double fried in beef tallow to achieve the perfect golden crunch.
- Insider Tip: Head to Maison Antoine in Place Jourdan. It is widely considered the best fry shack in the city. You can buy your fries and take them into one of the neighboring bars to enjoy them with a beer.
- The Real Waffle Debate: There are two types of waffles here. The Brussels Waffle is rectangular, light, and crispy. The Liège Waffle is oval, dense, and has chunks of caramelized pearl sugar inside.
- Pro Tip: Locals eat them plain or with a light dusting of sugar. Avoid the ones piled high with fruit and whipped cream as those are mostly for the cameras.
- The Chocolate Craft: Skip the supermarket brands and visit a master chocolatier like Pierre Marcolini or Wittamer. The pralines here are treated like works of art.

📍 The Must See List for the Busy Engineer
FOSDEM is famous for being crowded, so use your time wisely to see the city landmarks:
- The Grand Place: This is arguably the most beautiful town square in Europe. At night, the gold leaf on the guild houses reflects the breathtaking lights of the square. It is the perfect place to gather with other Postgres developers after the sessions.

- The Atomium: A giant stainless steel representation of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. It is a tribute to scientific progress and offers a panoramic view of the city.
